Introducing "Karanga Yetu": Locally Grown Peanuts

“Karanga Yetu” literally translates to “our peanuts.” It’s a wholesale brand of raw peanuts locally grown in Kenya. Kenya is a net importer of groundnuts, with over 80% of peanuts consumed in industrial and urban areas being imported. Our raw peanuts brand “Karanga Yetu” aims to be a game-changer by expanding into a wholesale brand of locally grown peanuts, targeting the wholesale market with aflatoxin-safe peanuts in Kenya. “Karanga Yetu” not only aims for import substitution but also provides opportunities for smallholder farmers.

Engaging Local
Farmers for Aflatoxin-
Safe Peanuts

Despite the developed market for groundnut products, Kenya has largely depended on imports from countries such as Malawi, Zambia, India, and Argentina. This dependency exists despite many regions in Kenya having the potential to produce more groundnuts. We engage local farmers in key groundnut-producing areas to produce aflatoxin-safe peanuts for the local market, providing reliable markets for smallholder growers and ensuring consumers are supplied with safe groundnuts. We improve awareness, access, and adoption of aflatoxin mitigation technologies such as Aflasafe and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP).

Collaborating for Sustainable Peanut Production

As part of our collaboration efforts in the peanut value chain, we work with various stakeholders, including Egerton University, the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Koppert Kenya, the World Food Program’s Farm to Market Alliance (FtMA), and farmers in key growing areas, including newly identified peanut-growing regions in semi-arid parts of Kenya.

These efforts aim to scale up local peanut production, substituting imports, saving the country foreign exchange, improving access to raw materials for processing, and providing reliable employment opportunities in both urban and rural areas. To promote sustainability, we advocate for the use of regenerative agriculture principles, enhanced seed varieties, and aflatoxin control technologies such as Aflasafe to ensure higher yields and good quality crops.
